DNA Father & Son's Electrical in Kettering installing a socket

Find yourself reaching for the extension lead a little too often? It’s probably time you consider adding a plug socket or two. With the average homeowner in Kettering owning around nine electrical devices; the demand for plug sockets continues to grow.

Older homes simply were not made to power so many different devices which is why people end up replying on extension leads. This is extremely dangerous, here’s why:

  • Extension leads overtime can deteriorate leading to potential fire risks and electric shocks.
  • Extension leads are not designed to be a long-term solution.
  • Extension leads should never be overloaded or doubled up as they can overheat quickly.
  • Extension leads are a huge trip hazard.

If you find yourself having to use an extension lead for a short period of time, just make sure you’re using it responsibly and you DON’T overload the sockets. Before your electrician installs additional plug sockets, he might need to check your electrical system to ensure it can cope with the additional load. If your existing electrical system is already stretched to the max, overloading this even more is NOT a smart idea.

Types of sockets

The most common type of plug sockets found in UK homes are the standard white sockets. However there’s nothing stopping you from opting for a different finish, like chrome or steel, or even adding a USB ports. USB sockets work in harmony with our modern-day devices and allow you to power more devices safely and efficiently.

Can I install a plug socket myself?

DNA Father & Son’s Electrical, Kettering will always recommend you avoid DIY electrics. We unfortunately attend to incorrectly installed sockets which result in the customer spending more money and sacrificing more of their time than if the had just hired an electrician in the first place.

How long does it take to install a plug socket?

Adding a plug socket or two should take no longer than a couple of hours. Adding just one singular plug socket would be considered a small job – the charge of this would be based on the electrician’s minimum charge rate.
