Are you considering battery storage for your home in Kettering?

DNA Father & Sons Electrical are experienced solar panel and battery storage installers. Take a look at the insightful guide we’ve put together, answering all your questions about battery storage.

So what is Battery storage?

Battery storage allows you to store excess electrical energy made from solar panels on your property. Storing the electrical energy for later use means you have electrical energy ready to use when you need it in the evenings.

Battery storage service in Kettering

A popular question we get asked is whether you can have a battery storage installed if you already have solar panels installed at your home. The answer is yes, it only takes a few hours for installation to take place. Prior to installation, we will inspect the status of the solar panels installed on your roof and most importantly, our qualified electricians check a particular device called an “inverter”.

The inverter converts DC or direct current which is the form of electrical energy made by your solar panels into AC or alternating current, we actually use AC current in our homes to power our electrical appliances. DNA Father & Sons Electrical can simply replace or upgrade the inverter if it is not compatible with the battery storage prior to installation. In most cases the inverter is set up and ready to use in conjunction with battery storage systems.

Types of battery storage in Kettering

DNA Father & Sons Electrical have typically installed two common types of battery storage in Kettering to date.

  • Lead acid batteries: Tend to have a shorter life span and are not as energy efficient but are a cheaper option.
  • Lithium ion batteries: Have a longer life span and more energy efficient but with quality, comes cost. These batteries are slightly more expensive.

You’re probably familiar with the use of lithium batteries in a range of electrical gadgets such as smart phones. Lithium batteries have a longer life span and can store large quantities of energy, this marks them the ideal option for battery storage in relation to solar panels too.

As experienced solar panel and battery storage installers, we suggest you opt for LFP batteries which is a type of lithium ion battery. There is a much lower risk of fire hazards as the process of “thermal runaway” is reduced.

Battery storage, top tips!

We advise that battery storage is installed in easily accessible areas, quite close to the mains electrical system in a dry location. Ideal spaces include the loft, garage or even utility rooms.

It's important to think about the battery storage size you would like installed, this all depends on the size of your property, the number of occupants, how much energy you use as a household and if you have any systems with high energy consumption such as a home EV charger.
